Upholstered or overstuffed furniture has become increasingly popular in recent years. There are plenty of sensible reasons for this:
- Upholstered furniture is much more comfortable.
- Its bulk sits solidly on the floor and gives a feeling of security and permanence.
- Its bulk also gives opportunity for effective blocks of color and design. You can achieve almost architectural results with your large, upholstered pieces.
Test your chairs and sofas for comfort first of all. Don’t be fooled into thinking that any upholstered piece of furniture is comfortable. The angel of the back is very important – so is the depth of the seat. Sit in any chair a good five minutes before you buy it. The most expensive chairs and sofas are not necessarily the most comfortable for you.
It doesn’t pay, however, to economize too stringently on upholstered furniture. The very cheap pieces won’t stand up. Their backs will hollow out just behind your shoulders, the cushions will become lumpy, and the springs will break.
